CONNECTING THE NATION'S TWO BUSIEST COMMUTER RAILROADS
The Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North carry more riders than any other commuter railroads in the country. Today, the only place they meet is Manhattan. Anyone riding between Long Island and Connecticut has to go all the way into the city and back out again. The Freedom Crossing changes that by linking the two systems directly across the Sound for the first time.
A SHORTER RIDE
A direct rail link means no more detour through New York City. Riders from Long Island can reach Bridgeport and the rest of Connecticut without changing trains in Manhattan, and Connecticut riders gain the same easy access to Long Island. Trips that take hours today become a short, simple ride.
FEWER CARS ON THE ROAD
When the train is the easier choice, more people take it. Giving commuters a real rail option takes pressure off I-95, the Long Island Expressway, and the city's crowded bridges, making the drive better for the people who still need to be on the road.
OPENING UP THE NORTHEAST
Once connected, Long Island riders can reach Metro-North's New Haven Line and, from there, the wider rail network across New England. Connecticut riders gain a direct route to Long Island's jobs, beaches, and towns. For the first time, the two regions will share one connected transit system.
